Tax recall fails

The special election called by voters for a tax rollback on the City of Gonzales failed last Saturday.

In all, 737 voters participated in the rollback election, or 18.6205 percent of Gonzales' 3,958 registered voters. In early voting, 199 voted for the rollback and 273 against. On Election Day, 116 voted for and 149 against. The total was 315 for a lower tax rate of 0.2248 and 422 deciding that the current tax rate of 0.3050 was just fine.

Of note, 571 registered Gonzales voters signed a petition late last year in support of a rollback election, with 492 of those signatures validated by the city secretary.

The next scheduled election in Gonzales is for mayor and for a slate of charter revisions. That round of voting is scheduled for May 4.
