GONZALES – Authorities are investigating a three-vehicle wreck that claimed the life of a local man, officials say.

The Texas Highway Patrol reported that at 4:34 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, Neal Barfield, 42, of Gonzales, was heading northbound on Highway 183 about five miles north of Gonzales in a 2006 Dodge pickup when he crossed over into the southbound lane and had a head-on collision with a 2016 Freightliner 18-Wheeler driven by James Yarger, 30, of Granbury.

Troopers said that for unknown reasons, Barfield drove into the opposite lane and crashed into the 18-wheeler.

Barfield was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Deidra Voigt.

It was also reported that the collision led to another wreck which involved a 2001 Ford F-250 driven by Kevin Groner, 28, of San Antonio, whose vehicle was struck by the Dodge. Groner was reported to be uninjured.

Yarger was taken to Gonzales Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for non-capacitating injuries. He was reported to be in stable condition.
