Tommie Jean McMurtry

Tommie Jean McMurtry, 88, of Gonzales, passed away Sunday, Aug. 20. She was born Feb. 27, 1929 in Austin, the daughter of Joe A. and Lena Cox Bowmer.

She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She attended the University of Texas Austin and graduated from the Marlin School of Nursing as a L.V.N. She married Lucian Lee McMurtry Jr. on September 25, 1948 at the Presbyterian Chapel at UT. She worked as a licensed vocational nurse and later joined her husband in the cattle business as the bookkeeper.

She enjoyed dominoes, bunco, canasta and the 42 club at the First United Methodist Church in Gonzales.

She is survived by her son L. Lee McMurtry III and wife Bonnie of Houston and her granddaughters Molly and Abby McMurtry both of Houston. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters Mary Joe “Polly” Brewer and Virginia McElhaney. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21. Funeral services will be 5 p.m. Monday at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Interment will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Cook-Walden Capital Park Cemetery in Pflugerville. Arrangements under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home, Gonzales.
