Turnovers sink Mustangs

SAN ANTONIO — Nixon-Smiley (2-2) dropped a road loss after failing to score after the first quarter.

The Mustangs lost 20-7 to San Antonio Cole, as the team couldn’t hold on to the ball, losing three fumbles in the game and throwing two interceptions.

Jason Yell led the team in rushing, running 21 times for 121 yards. Quarterback Colby Newman went 4-for-9 for 43 yards passing and two interceptions. He also rushed 24 times for 104 yards and the Mustangs’ lone score. Devin Hester caught a ball for 23 yards, Rodrigo Acevedo caught one for four yards and Yell caught two for 16 yards.

As a team, the Mustangs rushed 49 times for 239 yards. San Antonio Cole rushed 45 times for 349 yards.

Defensively, the Mustangs forced two interceptions as Daniel Rodriguez grabbed one and Newman grabbed the other. Yell forced a fumble and recovered while Jonathan Carlos forced another fumble and Ricky Flores recovered it

Carlos led the team in tackles with seven and six assisted.

Nixon-Smiley travels to Falls City (1-3) this Friday with kickoff scheduled at 7:30 p.m.
