Virginia “Ginny” Karlos

In tears or in triumph we must cling to Jesus Christ. We thank him for his enduring presence. Even before she was a child of God, Ginny Karlos was born to be a teacher, server, and giver.

On May 29th 2019, the Lord took her hand in His and then they went to look for Thumper.

She was born on January 9, 1922 in Las Vegas, New Mexico. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1943. She was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1943. She did her post graduate work at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She married T.L. “Thumper” Karlos on December 18, 1943 in Webster Groves, Missouri.

She and her family moved to Gonzales in 1949. She is a member of the Presbyterian Church of Gonzales, Texas. She was active in the church holding most offices and became a Trustee of the Church in 1983. Ginny served as co-Cub Scout leader for 3 years. She was a charter member of the Spade & Trowel Garden Club. She was a co-founder of the Gonzales Teen Center and served as co-coordinator of the youth activities for 3 years. She served on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce. Served as co-Chairman of the Come and Take It Celebration for 2 years. She also served on the Board of Directors for the United Fund for several years. Ginny served as President of Sesame Study Club.

Ginny’s real passion was teaching-----She loved to teach and she loved her students. She taught Social Studies and American Government and History at Gonzales High School from 1961-1974. All students that graduated from Gonzales High School were required by State of Texas to take American History and Government. As the only American Government Teacher at Gonzales High School, she touched the lives of all who passed through her class. She served as Audio Visual Coordinator for all of Gonzales Independent School District from 1975-1982. Ginny was the Senior Class Sponsor from 1963-1982. In 1982, the Gonzales High School Annual was dedicated to her.

Ginny served on the Media Advisory Board of Education Service Center , Region XIII in Austin for 10 years. She also served on the State Executive Board for TSTA for 2 years. She was awarded the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge Teachers Medal in 1969. She was awarded the Rotary Club Service Award in 1970. She has been included in Who’s Who among Secondary School leaders and the Bicentennial Memorial Education for Personalities of the South in 1976. In 1976, she was awarded one of the Most Prominent Educators of Texas in 1983.

Mom loved the “Lord Jesus Christ” and she loved our country, “The United States of America” with all her heart and soul.

Ginny is survived by son, Rick Karlos and wife Pam; five grandchildren, Reagan Karlos, Morgan Karlos and wife Maggie, Brenton Queal, Allison Warrell and husband Chris, Karrie Cato and husband Bob. Great- grandchildren; Cameron Queal, Jordan Queal, Austin Queal, Caroline Cato, Bo Cato, Oliver Karlos, new baby girl Karlos to be born in August.

She is also survived by Brooke and Bill Mueller, Kate and Chris Tabor, Tucker Mueller, and Jim and Barb Sloss and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Lureen Kronig, brother Edwin Kronig, and husband, T. L. “Thumper” Karlos.

Gravesite Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 10, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery followed by a memorial service at the Presbyterian Church of Gonzales at 2:00 PM. Refreshments following in fellowship hall of church.

Pallbearers: Jim Sloss, Bill Mueller, Brenton Queal, Reagan Karlos, Morgan Karlos, Bryan Denman, Wayne Ellison, Emil Riedel, Ken Sekula.

Honorary pallbearers are those who meant the most to her: All her friends and former students.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Gonzales and /or Gonzales Youth Center.

Arrangements were under the direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home, 906 St. Paul Street, Gonzales, TX.
