Volleyball playoffs: Waelder in; Gonzales and Nixon-Smiley are out

It was a tough final day of district play for Gonzales County's three high school volleyball teams. All three teams lost – including two that were in must-win situations.

As a result, Waelder is the only team heading to the playoffs. The 1A school will face Runge at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 in the Bi-District round in Yoakum.

Gonzales lost in heart-breaking fashion to Pleasanton in 5 sets at home. Pleasanton, whose two district wins were both over the Apaches, earned the district's final playoff spot.

Nixon-Smiley rode a second-half surge to make its finale against Marion have playoff implications. The Mustangs lost in three sets to end their season.
