WAELDER — Waelder’s athletic director Brandon Howard officially announced during the Wildcats’ athletic banquet Tuesday night that he will not be returning to his post next school year.

“I won’t be back next year,” he said at the podium in front of a crowd of athletes, parents and administrators. “The three years I’ve been here I’ve built a close relationship with a lot of these guys. I knew it would be hard, but I didn’t know it would be this hard to move on. It’s something I have to do. I’m going to miss y’all.”

Howard was the head boys’ basketball coach for the Wildcats, accumulating an 84-24 record in his three years in Waelder. The team reached the Region IV-1A tournament all three years, making it to the regional finals in the 2014-15 season and the regional semifinals in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. The Wildcats were district runner ups last season, co-district champions in the 2015-16 season and outright district champions in the 2014-15 season. Howard was also named coach of the year in the district in his first two years on the job.
