Waelder’s Malorie Puente will be taking her talents down south as she sets her eyes on the Dominican Republic to play overseas basketball for a week.

Puente, a rising senior for the Lady Cats, announced that she’ll be putting on the red, white and blue colors to represent the U.S. in her basketball trip.

“The organization is held by ACIS ‘the leader in quality education travel,’” Puente said. “The coach is Carlton Williams from Nordheim High School. The team and I will be representing USA.”

Puente arrived at practice weeks ago and was surprised to see that she was the lone girl in the gym. She noticed that the “giants” in the gym were shooting around, and when she saw her coach she asked if she was in the right spot.

“Didn’t Coach Acklin tell you?,” the coach replied, “you’re the only girl on the team.”

“My heart just sunk,” Puente said, “because now I really can’t mess up. But to me, it wasn’t any different than practicing with boys here.”

The Lady Wildcat leaves June 12 to the Dominican Republic where the team meets with their tour guide and then get into their hotels and later practices. Their first game is June 13 against a local team. They stay in Santiago to play a tournament June 14. On June 15 they travel to Sosua, Dominican Republican for the next three days and comes back to the states June 19.
