Waelder to establish tax substation

AELDER — It turns out people in the Waelder area soon won't have to drive all the way to Gonzales on their day off to take care of their tax and registration business, as they will be able to use a county building in the area to do so.

On April 10, county commissioners OK'd the use of Pct. 2 Commissioner Donnie Brzozowski's former office in Waelder as a new Tax-Assessor Collector substation.

Tax Assessor Crystal Cedillo said the office is located at 520 Railroad Drive, and will be open from 8-5 p.m. on Saturdays.

“We will be full-service,” Cedillo said. “You can come in and pay your taxes, purchase your car sticker, transfer titles, buy boat registration and everything you can do at our Gonzales location.”

Cedillo said her office employees currently go to Waelder and Nixon substations once a month, but mentioned that they can only sell registrations if they have their renewal forms.

“We're limited by the state as to what we can do when we don't have an [official] work station there. If you have a farm plate, we can't renew it. If you don't have a renewal form, we won't be able to renew the registration. Whereas once we have a dedicated substation there, then we can get no-charge equipment from the state. We'll be able to do everything.”

Cedillo said the state has informed her office that the timeline for the new office is within 60 days. She also noted that if this new project goes well commissioners will look into establishing a tax substation in Nixon.

“I'd definitely like to do that,” Cedillo said. “I think it's wonderful, and I'm excited about it. It will be a convenience for those outside of Gonzales.
