WRIGHTSBORO — The July 4th holiday “got off to a bang” for residents of the area when an 18-wheeler carrying a load of broiler chickens turned over on FM 108 13 miles southwest of Gonzales.

At 9:30 a.m. Monday, the truck in question was en route from a local farm to Holmes Foods in Nixon when its driver, Ricky Wells of Nixon, lost control of the vehicle while taking a sharp curve. Witnesses said the truck rolled onto its side and slid partially off the roadway, spilling cages filled with broiler chickens into a resident’s front yard.

State troopers, sheriff’s deputies, EMS and the Gonzales County Fire Department arrived at the scene, as well as several Holmes Foods employees who helped retrieve the scattered birds.

Wells claimed he was driving the speed limit (45 mph) when he felt the steering wheel start to shake, and felt “a tire acting up” before losing control and crashing. Wells said he was uninjured and refused medical treatment at the scene.

Within the past few years there have been several incidents with trucks carrying chickens spilled over a resident’s house.
