Ysabel “Shorty” “Chavelo” Moreno, age 83, of Nixon, passed away Aug. 13. He was born in Nixon, Texas on July 8, 1935, to Nieves and Angelita Martinez Moreno.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings: Felipe, Juanita, Willie and Basillia.

Shorty was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Nixon. He worked as a truck driver for Fleming Company for 26 years before retiring to ranch work.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Irene Palacio Moreno; his children: Gene Moreno (Marie) of Nixon; Ray Moreno (Nancy) of Austin; Thelma DeLeon (Michael Ortmann) of Nixon; Roxanne Villasana (Chris) of Smiley; his grandchildren: Neil Moreno, Jeffrey Moreno (Natasha), Tiffany Moreno, Miranda Galindo (Noel), Torrey Moreno, Vanessa DeLeon (Johnny Gonzalez), Bianca DeLeon (Tony Pena), Treca DeLeon, Cecilia Villasana, and Elias Villasana; his great-grandchildren: Gavino, Aiden Jacob, Alex, Aubrey, Anthony, and Jack; a sister, Natalia; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as other loving family and many friends.

A visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 16, from 4-8 p.m. at Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon with a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. by Deacon John Moreno. The funeral mass will be held Friday, Aug. 17, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Nixon with Father Ouseph Kuriakose officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
