4th of July fireworks to go on as planned

Main Street announced last week that the fireworks for 4th of July celebration will still go happen, even though the concerts have been canceled due to COVID-19.

The fireworks are scheduled to go off at 10 p.m., bringing excited onlookers a 30-minute show.

“Our new saying is ‘COVID aware, because we care,” new Main Street manager Liz Reiley said. Reiley explained that Main Street will abide by the health and safety guidelines set by Gov. Greg Abbott under the Phase II of Texas Reopening.

“The board feels like this would be the best opportunity for the town to at least have some sort of celebration,” she added.

The decision to cancel the concerts was made a few weeks ago, due to the current guidelines set by the state.

“Please be aware of the current guidelines of the Next Phase of Reopening TX as we want to ensure that our community is doing all that we can to stop the spread of COVID-19,” Main Street wrote on a post sent out via social media. “On Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott announced the next phase of reopening the state. Social distancing, cloth face covers, hand and cough etiquette with increased cleaning practices continue to be strongly recommended for all operations. For details on this phase of reopening, visit www.gov.Texas.gov/opentexas.”

The fireworks display is expected to go on, rain or shine. Follow Main Street on Facebook for details and information about the celebration, in case severe inclement weather forces the board to change plans. In case of a downpour, Main Street has a contingency plan that allows the board to light up the sky the next night with the fireworks show.
