Annie Mary Rabel, 96, of Harwood, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019. Annie was born January 16, 1923 in Gonzales County to Otto and Amelia Annie Knezek Schellenberg. She married Henry Rabel on December 19, 1936 in Gonzales.

Annie, along with four siblings, grew up on farm amidst the devasting Great Depression. Hardships from the depression were a part of life for nearly everyone living through these difficult times. Families made do with what was available to them, Annie’s family was no different. They raised vegetables to can for themselves and sell for cash. They raised cattle and a few chickens for the eggs and meat. The children worked in the cotton fields picking cotton for others making nearly 50 cents per hundred pounds of cotton picked to support the family’s needs. Annie continued working hard throughout her life growing fresh vegetables, canning vegetables, picking blackberries, gathering pears, pecans and persimmons for sale. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed her children’s clothing. She was a resourceful and hardworking woman whose hands told a story of perseverance through hard work, a softness for her loving touch and a willingness to come together in prayer. She was a good mother who cared deeply and passionately for her family. Her faith in God was strong and pure. Though she lived with minimal means most of her life, she never complained, hers was a life of caring and compassion for others with a soft and gentle heart and a love for animals. Proverbs 31:28 celebrates such a woman in stating “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also and he praises her”.

Annie Mary Rabel is survived by her adoring children, daughters, Lillie Suitt (Phil) of Buda, Irene Kunkel of Harwood, sons, Vernon Rabel (Mary) of Harwood, Ernest Rabel of Denver, Co, Johnny Rabel of Austin, sister-in-law, Joyce Schellenberg of Harwood, 8 grandchildren, 12, great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, an infant sister, and brothers, Max, Herbert, Louie and Danny Schellenberg.
