Apaches Barnick, Garza qualify for track regional

Senior Samantha Barnick has qualified for the Regional Track and Field Meet in both the triple jump and long jump, and still has three relay races to compete in tonight. 

The 4A Area meet is being held at Wimberly High School.

Barnick won the area crown in the triple jump at 34-feet, 11 3/4-inches.She took fourth in the long jump.

Derrick Garza won a jump-off to secure fourth place in the high jump and qualify for region. 

Madelynn Brown, who won the district high jump title with a jump of 5-0, lost her jump-off and finished in fifth.

Peyton Ruddock took fifth in the long jump. She will, however, have the opportunity to qualify for regionals tonight in the 100 hurdles and in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Ruddock was the district champ in the 100 hurdles.

For the boys, the Apaches will compete in the 100 with Bryce Brown, in he 200 with CJ Smith, and in the relays with Derrick Garza, Brady Barfield, Brown, and TJ Rioja.

Apaches Track in March 30-31 District meet

The Gonzales High School girls and boys track teams will be represented at the Area Meet on Thursday, April 15 at Wimberley High School.

The girls won five 4A District 27 champions On March 31: Sam Barnick, who overcame injuries to post personal bests and first-place finishes in the both the long jump (17-1¾) and triple jump (35-11) and to run a leg on the first-place 4x100 relay team along with Peyton Ruddock, Kristen Baker, and Paisley Ploeger; Ruddock in the 100 hurdles at 15.623; and Madelynn Brown won the district high jump title with a jump of 5-0.

The girls also qualified for Area with a second-place finish in the 4x200 relay with the same quartet from the 4x100 team, Kaitlyn Taylor’s second-place in the discus at 92-2½, Ruddock placing third in the long jump at 16-2¾, Tianna Smith taking third in the 800 (2.25.770), Maria Vasquez finishing fourth in the 3200 (13:18.000); Smith, Kristen Baker, Ploeger and Barnick finishing fourth in the 4x400 (4:25.317).

For the boys, Area qualifiers were: Bryce Brown (100, 4^th, 11.556); CJ Smith (200, 4^th, 24.201); 1600: Derrick Garza, Brady Barfield, Brown, and TJ Riojas (4x100, 4^th, 45.843); and Garza, Barfield, Brown, and Riojas (4x200, 4^th, 1:37.425).
