Apaches beat Cuero, claim third in district

The Gonzales Apaches used a 9-2 second period to turn a two-point deficit into a five-point lead and they never trailed again as they celebrated Senior Night Tuesday, Feb. 15, with a 48-41 win over the Cuero Gobblers that clinched third place in District 27-4A.

The Apaches know they will be playing the Wimberley Texans in a bi-district matchup Tuesday, Feb. 22, but are still determining where and when they will meet. Wimberley is the runner-up in District 28-4A.

Cuero and Gonzales battled back and forth in the opening period of their contest, with the Gobblers taking an 11-9 lead at the end of the frame. The Apaches then went on a 7-0 run in the second period to go up 16-11. Both teams would score one more bucket before time expired to make it 18-13 at the half.

In the third period, Cuero could only get as close as four points at 19-15, 21-17 and then 23-19. With an 8-1 run, Gonzales pushed to lead to 11 points, 31-20. The Gobblers would score the last three points of the frame to make it 31-23.

The fourth quarter saw Cuero creep back to within five points at 32-27, but the Apaches then went on a 11-point run to take their largest lead at 43-27. The Gobblers would close the gap to seven at the end of the game, but could not get any closer.
