The Apaches FC fell to third place in District 27-4A Tuesday Feb. 25 after a 3-1 road loss to the district-leading La Vernia Bears, snapping what had been a four-match win streak.
The loss drops Gonzales (6-2-2) behind Cole (6-2) in the race for second place. Cole played Luling Tuesday but a final score was not available at press time.
The Apaches had kept pace for second place in District 27-4A with wins over JFK and Luling last week. Gonzales beat the JFK Rockets, 3-0, at Apache Field on Monday, Feb. 17, and followed that up with a 6-0 shellacking of Luling at home after scoring four goals in the first period and two more in the second.
Gonzales is now 8-5-4 overall and has two more regular season matches with a March 1 contest against fourth-place San Antonio Memorial at Apache Field and a March 7 contest at Cole, which could determine which team finishes in second.
For the season, Gonzales has scored 38 goals in district play and allowed 13, while overall, they have scored 57 and allowed just 28.
