Area athletes compete in TYRA finals

Top athletes from around the state have flocked to J.B. Wells Arena to compete in the Texas Youth Rodeo Association finals this week. Tuesday was the opening day of competition, with about half of the athletes taking on the first round performance. The first round concluded Wednesday night, though results were unavailable before press time.

Of the seven area athletes competing in the finals, six performed on Tuesday with the other two scheduled for Wednesday night.

Dakota Schmidt of Cost competed in the junior girls figure 8, timed in at 10.160 seconds. Her time was fifth best among the performers Tuesday. Schmidt also competed in junior ribbon roping where she and Colin Fox were timed at 15.840 seconds, 11th best on Tuesday.

Luling’s Emma Knox also competed in junior ribbon roping. She and Holden Weaver of Corpus Christi were timed at 6.520 sec., third best of the night. Knox no timed in junior girls breakaway and in team roping with Three Rivers’ Rylee Howton.

Harwood’s Peyton Stone had one event to compete on Tuesday, taking on the junior girls figure 8. She finished with a time of 9.935 sec., third best of the night.

Lauren Stone, also of Harwood, competing in the senior girls cloverleaf event with a time of 19.380 sec., seventh best of the night.

In team roping, both Sadie Thibodeaux of Gonzales, with Kingsville’s Ace Avelar, and Taylor Glass of Gonzales, with Taylor’s Mayce Marek, no timed Tuesday night.

Gonzales’ Audrey Thibodeaux first round performances were scheduled for Wednesday.

The second round of performances are scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. and Friday at 1 p.m. The championship short go is set for Saturday at 3 p.m.
