Argument leads to shooting death near Nixon

An argument between two men turned deadly at a Gonzales County residence north of Nixon early Sunday, May 28.

According to Gonzales County Sheriff’s deputies, the GCSO received a call at 12:54 a.m. Sunday about shots being fired in the 100 block of County Road 168, which is off Texas Highway 80 near Clear Fork Creek, north of the Nixon-Smiley High School campus.

Upon arrival, deputies found one man who had been the victim of a gunshot wound and who was later pronounced deceased on the scene. The victim was later identified as Jose Robles Quintana.

A second individual who had been assaulted was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) for treatment of injuries. That person was identified as Samuel Garcia-Mendiola, who was also identified as the person who had shot and killed Robles Quintana.

Garcia-Mendiola was later arrested and charged with murder and is currently being held in lieu of $750,000 bond.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Gonzales County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Department and The Texas Rangers.
