Arline Pettus, 93, of Gonzales, passed away Monday, Jan. 25, 2021. Arline was born Dec. 29, 1927 in Gonzales County to Harrison and Beulah Linebarger Gescheidle. Arline lived a very full life. She married Percy Jarmon Pettus in the First Baptist Church of Gonzales in June of 1948. She was a devoted wife for 72 years, until Percy’s passing in February of 2020.

While helping her husband with their ranching business, Arline also earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Southwest Texas State University. She then taught the children of Gonzales for over twenty-five years. Many Jr. High English students benefitted from her expertise. Several of her nieces and nephews were among her students. Arline later taught college English at Victoria College (Warm Springs Campus). As she neared retirement, she devoted her time to teaching homebound students, undoubtedly making a huge difference in many young lives.

Arline was an active member in her community. She was a devout Christian, and after her marriage, became an active member of First United Methodist Church in Gonzales. She attended services regularly for many years. She also held membership in Delta Kappa Gamma, the Sesame Study Club, Texas State Teacher’s Association, Texas Classroom Teacher’s Association, and Gonzales County Retired Teacher’s Association.

Although Arline and Percy had no children of their own, they bestowed love on their nieces and nephews and were often seen at various family gatherings.

Arline was a practical lady and was always a stylish dresser. She had an affinity for birds. Cardinals and hummingbirds were two of her favorites. She enjoyed visiting with friends. Arline and Percy were often seen in the company of other couples at local restaurants.

Although we know Arline is in the presence of God, and is in a much better place, she will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Arline Pettus is survived by her nieces: Vicki Miles “Marvin,” Lisa Holden “Bob,” Lori Yuja “George,” Leigh Kahn “Tom,” Virginia Pettus Tidwell, and Sharon Pettus Fitts; nephews: Connly Willmann “G.K.,” Randy Gescheidle “Vicki,” Tim Gescheidle “Lynn,” Chris Gescheidle “Dana,” William T Clark “Marge,” Harry Pettus, Warren Pettus, Jr., and James Dickinson “Bobbie”; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews; sisters-in-laws: Elsie Gescheidle and Jeanette Gescheidle.
