August George Zella, 86, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021. He was born Feb. 19, 1934 in Gonzales County to Louis and Anastasia Petras Zella. Gus married Judy Bundick on May 28, 1960 in Gonzales,

Gus grew up near the Hamon Community where he and his nine siblings picked cotton and hunted to put meat on their table. Gus loved to play dominoes and even at a very young age he was considered a master of the game. He personally saw that each one of his grandchildren had their own set of dominoes.

Early on Gus worked at Continental Produce for the DuBose family. He loved working for the family and learned a great deal. Gus had a tremendous work ethic, a trait he shared with his family, and it was not long before he bought his own poultry houses and raised broilers for Holly Farms and Tyson. He raised cattle and enjoyed a sense of peace just sitting out back and just watching them graze and the end of the day.

Gus was a wonderful cook and often showed his love in preparing large meals for his family. His fried chicken was legendary for being delicious. Gus had a tremendous love for family, and he cherished every moment he had with them.

August George Zella is survived by his adoring family: daughter: Diane McCaskill; son: Bryan Zella; brothers and sisters-in-laws: Raymond and Leona Zella, Carl and Delores Zella, Robert Zella, and Kenneth Zella, all of Gonzales; grandchildren: Jeffrey McCaskill, Amy Gibson, Kyndel DuBose, Presleigh Zella, Zoii Zella; and seven great-grandchildren.
