Barr qualifies for state powerlifting meet
Two Gonzales Apache powerlifters placed in the top 5 at the Region 4, Division 2 meet at Saratoga on Saturday, March 12, with one earning a trip to the state meet on March 26 in Abilene.
Jessiah Barr advanced to the state meet by finishing second in the 148-pound class with a total of 1,155 pounds lifted, including 455 on squat, 260 on bench and 440 on dead lift.
Cesar Matamoros placed fifth in the same weight-class with 1,105 pounds total lifted, including 430 pounds on squat, 250 pounds on bench and 425 on dead lift.
Others on the team who competed included Anthony Castro and Daniel Garcia in the 114-pound class, Layne Thiele in the 220-pound class and Omar Borjon in the heavyweight class. Overall, the team finished 14th out of 28 teams with six points.
