BASKETBALL: Apaches close out Schulenburg tourney with 4-0 mark

The Gonzales Apaches finished the second day of the Schulenburg tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 28, without a blemish for a perfect 4-0 record in round-robin play to run their season record to 13-3 overall.

The Apaches knocked off Columbus, 58-42, in the first game Tuesday and then stopped host school Schulenburg, 47-38, in their second game of the day.

Against Columbus, the trio of Xavier Aguayo, Jeremiah Hastings and Angel Martinez combined for 47 of the team’s 58 points. Aguayo led all scorers with 20, while Hastings had 14 and Martinez had 13.

Against Schulenburg, Hastings had 13 points to lead the Apaches, while Aguayo and Jacob Bakken each had nine. Brady Barfield finished with eight.

Gonzales now goes to Sealy to play their final non-district game on Tuesday, Jan. 4 and the Apaches will have a bye on Friday, Jan. 8. They start district play on Friday, Jan. 14 at La Vernia.
