BASKETBALL: Guard play by Alice sends Gonzales to 52-35 loss

The Gonzales Lady Apaches had no answer for the Alice Lady Coyote 1-2 punch of freshman guard Kaylin Cervantes and senior guard Madison Valdez as they lost on the road, 52-35, on Tuesday, Dec. 21, in a non-district game.

The two Lady Coyotes combined for almost as many points together (32) as the entire Gonzales team (35). Cervantes scored 22 points to lead all scorers, while Valdez had 10 points.

Bella Aguero led the Lady Apaches with eight points, including one three-pointer, while Kelly Breitschopf scored six on two treys. Niyahna Lowery and Sidney McCray each scored five points, while Madison York and Ariel Villanueva each had a three-pointer. Delaini Seger-Gordon also scored three points and Kilee Schwausch scored two.

Gonzales hit five three-pointers in the game, but shot only 26 percent from the field. The Lady Apaches were outrebounded by Alice, 43-35, and the Lady Coyotes also had a 23-9 advantage in steals.

The Lady Apaches were playing in the Wimberley Tournament this week.
