BASKETBALL: Lady Apaches drop road game at Mathis, 47-24

The Gonzales Lady Apaches fell behind early and just could not get much going against the Mathis Lady Pirates as they lost a road game, 47-24, on Friday, Dec. 10.

Gonzales (5-11) only shot 17.1 percent from the field in the game, hitting 7-of-41 shots overall, and just 30.8 percent from the free throw line (8-of-26).

Mathis outrebounded the Lady Apaches, 56-37, and had big advantages in steals (22-10) and turnovers forced (38-28). The Lady Pirates also scored 23 points off turnovers — almost as many points as Gonzales scored the entire game.

In the first period, Mathis jumped out to a 9-2 advantage and increased their lead to 26-6 at the break. In the second half, the Lady Apaches played a much closer game, but were outscored 13-10 in the third and equaled the Lady Pirates, 8-8, in the fourth period.

Madison York led Gonzales with eight points, while Bella Aguero and Kelly Breitschopf both had five points. Sydney McCray and Audrey Martinez each scored two points and Macy Sample and Delaini Seger-Gordon each scored one.

Niyahna Lowery and Kilee Schwausch each had a team-high five rebounds while Audrey Martinez had three steals.

The Lady Apaches are scheduled to play at Lake Belton in Temple on Friday, Dec. 17. Game time is 5:30 a.m.
