BASKETBALL: Lady Mustangs control 59-33 victory over Stockdale

The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs moved into second place in District 26-3A with a 59-33 shellacking of Stockdale on the road Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Nixon-Smiley (15-13 overall, 4-2 district) kept pace with Marion by controlling the tempo of Tuesday night’s game and connecting from three-point land as the Lady Mustangs hit 6-of-14 from behind the arc. They also hit 13 of their 21 free throw attempts. They also only turned the ball over nine times

Greenlee Houseton led the team in scoring with 17 points and seven rebounds and also added four steals as well. Both Madisyne Rice and Mady Velasquez had 12 points and were deadly from three-point range, as Rice hit 3-of-5 treys and Velasquez had 2-of-5.

Abby Fox scored six points with five rebounds and five steals, while Ariel Villanueva had four points and five rebounds. Kendall Amaya and Criselle Stansel each scored three points, with Amaya adding three rebounds and three steals. Natalee Mendez scored two points with six rebounds and five steals.

The Lady Mustangs host district leader San Antonio Cole at home Friday, Jan. 21, and then are off until they play at Luling on Friday, Jan. 28.
