BASKETBALL: Mustangs return to winning ways, blow out Pettus

Eleven players scored for the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs on Friday, Dec. 17, as they had no problem getting back in the win column during a 75-31 road blowout of the Class 2A Pettus Eagles.

The Class 3A Mustangs (11-1) shook off the rust from their only loss of the season on Dec. 14 and jumped out to an early 23-8 lead in the first quarter. They never looked back as they outscored their hosts, 52-23, over the final three periods in a contest that was not ever close.

Ruben Bomer scored 14 points to lead the Mustangs, while Brayden Martinez had 13 points and Luke Moses and Holden Canion had nine. Dustin Mejia had eight points, while Braxton Regalado scored seven and Jeremiah Munoz contributed five. David Abundis scored four points and scoring two points each were Kade Dixon, Sebastian Ortiz and Aiden Flores.

Nixon-Smiley plays its first district game on the road Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Great Hearts Northern Oaks. They are then off until they host Luling on Jan. 4.
