BASKETBALL: Mustangs win district opener at GHNO

The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs won their last game before Christmas break, opening district with a 61-54 victory on the road against the Great Hearts Northern Oaks (GHNO) Griffins in San Antonio on Tuesday, Dec. 21.

The Mustangs (12-1, 1-0) jumped out to an early 21-11 lead in the first quarter, but GHNO battled them all the way to the end before coming up short.

Nixon-Smiley was led by Dustin Mejia with 16 points and Bradyn Martinez with 15. David Abundis scored 10, whileHolden Canion had nine, Braxton Regalado had eight and Kade Dixon added three.

The Mustangs JV also were victorious with a 50-35 win over the Griffins JV. The Mustangs JV took a commanding lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Nixon-Smiley was led by Carl White Jr. with 18 points, Tristen Mikesh with 14, Cesar Ochoa and Dakota O’neal each with six, John Garza with three, Nicholas Martinez with two, and Eduardo Betancourt with one.

The Mustangs will be the host school in the Nixon-Smiley Tournament beginning Tuesday, Dec. 28.
