BASKETBALL: Nixon-Smiley ladies sizzle in 75-24 rout

It took the Kenedy Lady Lions four periods to score 24 points in their game against Nixon-Smiley on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

It took the host Lady Mustangs a little more than a period to score that same amount — and they proceeded to tack on even more points in a 75-24 rout.

Four Nixon-Smiley players scored in double figures. As a team, the Lady Mustangs made 23 steals and snagged 42 rebounds as they improved their record to 8-5 overall.

Nixon-Smiley held a 15-6 advantage after one period of play and imposed their will on the Lady Lions in the second to take a 36-12 lead at the break. It was more of the same in the second half as the Lady Mustangs outscored Kenedy, 22-8, in the third period and 17-4 in the fourth.

Greenlee Houseton led Nixon-Smiley with 16 points and added five assists and six steals. Mady Velasquez scored 15 points and had three rebounds and three steals. Natalee Mendez scored 13 points and contributed seven rebounds. Criselle Stansel scored 13 points and had three rebounds and three assists.

Madisyne Rice and Abby Fox each scored four points, while Cecilia Villasana, Mckaylah Filla, Ariel Villanueva, Kendall Amaya and Deanna Amaya each had two points. Fox had five assists and six steals; Villanueva had seven rebounds; K. Amaya had five rebounds and three assists; D. Amaya had six rebounds; and Rice and Filla had three rebounds each.

The Lady Mustangs were scheduled to play at the Moulton Invitational Tournament Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 9-11.
