BASKETBALL: Nixon-Smiley wins Moulton Katz Klassic, improves to 10-0

For the second straight week, the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs won a tournament, this time sweeping the Moulton Katz Klassic and improving their record to a perfect 10-0 so far.

In the first game of the tournament, the Mustangs defeated the Halletsville Brahmas, 40-35. Nixon-Smiley was led in scoring by Bradyn Martinez with 15 points and Dustin Mejia with 13 points.

The second game of the tournament pitted the Mustangs against host Moulton and the Mustangs came out on top of the Bobkatz, 42-33. Martinez was again the leading scorer with 19 points, while Mejia and David Abundis each scored six.

Game three had Nixon-Smiley playing Halletsville Sacred Heart and defeating them by a score of 54-40. Meja had 17 points for the Mustangs, while Martinez and Luke Moses each scored 11.

Finally, in game four, the Mustangs stomped the Weimar Wildcats by a 44-24 score to clam the tournament championship. Mejjia led the team with 16 points, while Martinez had 11 and Abundis scored eight.

Martinez was named the Tournament MVP. Mejia and Abundis were named to the All-Tournament Team.

On Tuesday, Dec. 14, Nixon-Smiley was scheduled to host the Gonzales Apaches at home at 8 p.m. On Friday, Dec. 17, they will play away at Pettus.
