Buckles, saddles won at TYRA finals

Many Gonzales athletes finished the Texas Youth Rodeo Association finals with some saddles and buckles after successful rodeo performances at J.B. Wells Arena last week.

The big winner was Taylor Glass who was the 2019 TYRA Senior All Around Cowgirl. She edged out Sweeny’s Paisley Pierce, Bellville’s Jayci Byler and hometown cowgirl Sadie Thibodeaux.

Thibodeaux did win many prizes as the TYRA Finals All Around Cowgirl as well as the year-end champion pole bender.

Meanwhile, Audrey Thibodeaux placed 10th overall in junior girls and the year-end champion in figure 8 and poles.

The hometown cowgirls also finished out on top by the end of the year in many events.

Glass finished fourth in cloverleaf, seventh in breakaway, sixth in goat tying, 10th in poles, second in ribbon roping and 22nd in team roping.

Sadie Thibodeaux finished as the year-end champion in poles, ninth in cloverleaf, 10th in breakaway, fifth in goat tying, fifth in ribbon roping and 25th in team roping.

Audrey Thibodeaux finished as the year-end champion in figure 8, the year-end champion in poles, 17th in cloverleaf and 28th in goat tying.

Other athletes competing in the finals include Emma Knox of Luling, who did well in junior ribbon roping. Knox and her partner Holden Weaver finished the first go with a time of 6.520 seconds and the second go at 7.120 seconds. Knox also competed in team roping with Ryle Howton, no-timing in the first go and finished with a 16.480-second time in the second go.

Harwood’s Lauren Stone finished the year 14th overall in senior girls after her performances last week. Stone was timed at 19.380 seconds in the first go of cloverleaf, then 19.213 seconds in the second go. She also took on goat tying where she finished top five in all of her performances, including a third-best 8.469-second time on her first go, fifth-best 9.902-second time on her second go and a third-best 8.448-second time on her short go. Stone also placed fourth in her first go of senior girls poles with a time of 21.650 seconds. Her second go was timed at 32.367 seconds. Stone finished eighth in the year-end list of senior goat tying.

Cost’s Dakota Schmidt finished the year sixth in the year-end list of junior ribbon roping as a runner. Schmidt was timed at 10.160 seconds and 10.018 seconds in figure 8. She and Colin Fox were timed at 15.840 seconds in their first go of ribbon roping, then timed at 6.460 seconds on their second go, which was the fourth-best time that round.
