SHINER ST. PAUL

Cardinals look to build off victory

It’s much easier to build off a victory than a defeat. With their 49-28 victory over Yorktown last week, the Shiner St. Paul Cardinals (1-0) come into this Friday looking to improve as a team and fix the errors they made in that win.

“We score a lot of points, we had some big plays to do that,” St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “There were times where we executed really well on each side of the ball. The takeaway is our kids played pretty hard, [and] gave great effort.”

Wachsmuth noted that there were a few mistakes, such as a few turnovers. But those mistakes are easier to fix after a win.

“All three phases we did some really good things,” he said. “We just didn’t do enough good things, not consistent enough.”

This week, the Cardinals take on a speedy Victoria St. Joseph (0-0) offense who operates under a spread. In order to contain the Flyers, the Shiner St. Paul defense will need to “have that great pursuit, recognize formations, play quickly and play with tremendous effort,” Wachsmuth said.

Defensively, the Flyers base out of an odd front, though the Cardinals expect teams to stack the box against them. The key for the Cardinals is to hold on to the ball with their heavy-run game, misdirection and score points off of their play action passes.

Kickoff for the game is set for 7:30 p.m.
