The Gonzales Apaches returned back on the road to San Antonio as they take on the Cole Cougars Tuesday, Dec. 10.
The Apaches fell to Cole, 60-29, and dropped to 5-6 on the season.
Apaches head basketball coach Steven Pinchback knew Cole was going to be tough challenge for his team, but he said it’s about testing his team against tough teams.
“We're trying to play really good teams to help us prepare for later. So I'm telling the guys, that's what we're working for. We'll be better for it. It's tough right now, but we're still really trying to find our way mixed in with some of the younger guys. I mean, there's three or four freshmen out there, so basically, right now, we're still just trying to find our niche, working together and doing some things that'll help us down the road,” Pinchback said.
The Apaches will be facing more tough tests in the Navarro tournament Thursday, Dec. 12, in which they are scheduled to take on Hallettsville, Davenport and Marion.
“We're just gonna go out there and there's some good teams there that's gonna get us prepared. Like I said, we're just gonna go out there and try to play hard, do some of the things that we've been doing right now. You know, we're five to six. So we do some good things. We do some bad things. So I'm looking for more consistency. That's the main thing,” Pinchback said.
The Apaches will return home for a non-district game against the Navarro Panthers and Pinchback said they are a good team and a playoff team last season.
“So again, just trying to schedule guys that are going to help us compete, help us get better. It's not for the weak. I told the guys earlier, we could schedule some teams that we could beat, but that just makes you feel good. It doesn't have anything to do with getting better and being prepared when it's time to make a playoff run. So I'm going to keep sticking with the formula, trying to play hard play good teams, and by the end of this thing, we're going to be one of those teams that are a good team, so it's just going to mentally perpare for us,” Pinchback said.
The Apaches will take on Panthers in the Apache Auxiliary Gym.
Tip off set for 6:30 p.m.
