Gonzales Independent School District reported its first postivie case of COVID-19 on campus late Wednesday, Oct. 7.

“The student was last on campus on Thursday, October 1, 2020,” an announcement on the district’s website reads. “The district has already made contact with those who came into ‘close contact’ with the student.”

The student goes to Gonzales High School, and the district cannot disclose further information due to HIPAA guidelines.

"We will continue to work with our staff members, parents and students to keep everyone healthy and safe," the district's announcement reads. "If your child is ill or being tested for COVID-19, please notify your campus office and campus nurse. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

This brings the total of COVID-19 cases to 1,107, with 9 deaths reported and 1,093 cases estimated to have recovered, according to reports from County Judge Patrick C. Davis. There are currently five active cases in the county.

In Trauma Service Area P, which includes Gonzales County, there are a total of 236 COVID-19 positive hospital patients as of Oct. 6, with 146 of them being in general beds and 90 in ICU beds according to Department of State Health and Stafety. This makes up 5.5% of all hospitalizations in the area as of Oct. 6, down from 6.1% on Sept. 30.

Under the executive order issued by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Oct. 7, Gonzales County is within a Trauma Service Area with a low enough COVID-19 hospitalization rate that would qualify Judge Davis to opt-in and allow bars to reopen at 50% capacity, and allow all other businesses currently operating at 50% to increase to 75% capacity.
