Dave Campbell’s Texas Football predicts locals teams’ seasons

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine released its 2022 edition this week for coaches, players, sports journalists and Texas high school football fans.

The magazine covers every high school, college and professional (Cowboys and Texans) football team in Texas.

Gonzales

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football projects the Gonzales Apaches to finish fifth in the District 12-4A, Division II district standings. Cuero is expected to win the district, with La Grange taking runner-up and Smithville (third) and Giddings (fourth) rounding out the four playoff teams. Caldwell is expected to finish last in the district behind Gonzales.

State ranked teams within district are No. 6 Cuero and No. 24 La Grange.

Nixon-Smiley

The Nixon Smiley Mustangs are projected to finish sixth in a seven-team District 15-3A, Division II. Poth is expected to take the district title, followed by runner-up Natalia. Karnes City is expected to finish third while Comfort is expected to finish fourth.

Dilley is projected to finish fifth, just ahead of Nixon-Smiley while South San Antonio West is expected to come in last in the district standings.

The only state-ranked team in the district is No. 7 Poth.

Shiner

Back-to-back state champions the Shiner Comanches are projected to win District 15-2A, Division I, but it is not expected to be easy. Shiner’s toughest test will be from the team projected to finish in second place, Refugio. Ganado is predicted to take third, while Three Rivers is expected to finish fourth.

Kenedy (fifth), Skidmore-Tynan (sixth) and Bloomington (last) round out the remainder of the seven-team district.

Shiner is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 2A, while Refugio is ranked No. 3.

Shiner St. Paul

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football projects the defending state champion Shiner St. Paul Cardinals will win TAPPS Division IV, District 2, which is a four-team district. Perennial rival Halletsville Sacred Heart is expected to be the runner-up, while Temple Central Texas Christian is picked third and New Braunfels Christian is picked last.

Shiner St. Paul is ranked No. 15 in the state overall.
