Mr. Felton Robert Scallion Sr., who was one of the 10 children born to Noah and Mary Eliza Lewis Scallion, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 30, at the age of 94 after living a long and full life.

He is survived by a sister, Ms. Zelma Scallion-Cantrell of San Antonio, Texas and most of his children: Felton R. Scallion Jr. of Pacifica, California (Dorothy Jaye, wife); Margaret Rebecca Ann Scallion–Henry of San Antonio, Texas (husband, Charles (deceased)); Marva Scallion of Austin, Texas; Sandra Webb Spears of Seguin, Texas; Robert Scott (Terri) of Luling, Texas; and his adopted daughter, Joan C. Clark of San Antonio, Texas (husband, Rodger, (deceased)).

Mr. Scallion was further blessed with 15 grandchildren, 29 great–grandchildren and one great–great–grandchild. In addition to his devoted nephew, Foster Scallion, who lived with and provided daily care to his “Uncle Sunny,” Mr. Scallion is survived by a host of other nephews and nieces as well as their children.

His son, Stanley D. Scallion, preceded him in death, as did numerous other family members, including former wives Ruby Mae Steen, Frankie Mae Lott and Mary Polk.

He completed the 10th grade before serving honorably in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman First Class (E6). After his discharge from the Navy, he completed his GED, and using the experience he gained in the Navy eventually set up his own business, Scallion’s Paint Contracting. He also served as a longtime member of the American Legion.

A God-fearing man, known by his fellow Church members as a prayer warrior, he believed in forgiveness, acknowledging past mistakes, and then moving on to live life to the fullest. Believing that one could not have enough friends, Mr. Scallion never met a stranger, frequently striking up conversations with anyone he met. He loved interacting with people and telling jokes to make people laugh or lighten stressful situations. Many people, including his business associates and healthcare workers, cared deeply for Mr. Scallion and often expressed their admiration for him. He will certainly be missed by friends and family alike who will cherish memories of him.

Our family extends its appreciation to all of those who provided care for our father over the years, including his dear friend, Ms. Annie Williams, who transported him to many of his doctor’s appointments and Bible Study meetings once he could no longer drive. We are also thankful for Ms. Patricia Walker, who recently provided assistance at his home, and regularly studied the Bible with him. We extend our appreciation to his medical team, their assistants and other healthcare professionals who provided care for our father including, the Vaz Clinic, the Craig Cardiovascular Center, the South Texas Veteran’s Health Care Clinic, Excel Home Health, and the local HEB Pharmacy.

At the time of his passing, Mr. Scallion was a devoted member of Evans Chapel United Methodist Church (UMC) in Gonzales, Texas, and faithfully attended services there whenever his failing health allowed. Pastor Carolyn Pittman will preside over the Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Scallion on Sunday, June 9 at 2 p.m. at Henson Chapel UMC in Gonzales, Texas. A Viewing will be held on Saturday, June 8 from 1-3 p.m. at the Harris Family Funeral Home in Gonzales, Texas. Internment will follow immediately after the service at the Elm Slough Cemetery. A repass for family and friends will be afterwards at Henson Chapel UMC.
