Gonzales High school powerlifting will be well-represented at the THSWPA (Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association) Region 5 Powerlifting Meet.

Region 5, long recognized as the toughest region in Texas for powerlifting, will bring many of the state's best to Edinburg, Texas to compete for the opportunity to go to the THSWPA State Championships.

The Lady Apaches powerlifting team will be sending five individuals to compete. These Lady Apaches are: Madison Sampleton (last year's State Runner-Up) in the 220 pound weight class, Jazlin Juarez in the 242 pound weight class, Alize Miller and Midaya Cantu in the 165 pound weight class, and Mariah Mendoza in the 114 pound weight class.

Sampleton, Juarez, and Miller all return for the second straight year to the regional meet. Sampleton enters as the No. 2 lifter in her weight class in both the region and state while Juarez enters as the No. 1 lifter in the region. Miller enters at No. 7 and hopes to hit the qualifying total to punch her ticket to the biggest meet of the year.

Every competitor who finishes in the Top 2 or meets the qualifying total will advance to the THSWPA State Championships in March.

The Region 5 Powerlifting Championships will take place at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 8 a.m.
