Congresswoman Mayra Flores (TX-34) announced that Friday, Oct. 7, at 5 p.m. is the deadline for students in the 34th Congressional District of Texas to apply for a Congressional nomination to U.S. Military academies.

“It is a great honor to nominate stellar young men and women of Texas’ 34th District to attend one of the U.S. military service academies,” said Rep. Flores. “These nominees will not only be the great military minds of tomorrow, but they will also be leaders who will go on to shape our nation’s history.”

Each year, members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, N.Y.; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, Md.; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, Colo.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, N.Y. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, Conn., does not require a Congressional nomination for appointment.

To be considered for a nomination, applicants:

• Must be a U.S. citizen and resident of Texas 34th congressional district;
• Must be at least 17 years old but not yet 23 years old; and be
• Unmarried, without a child, and under no legal obligation to support children.
