GHS’ ‘Leading Ladies’ earns several awards at contest

The Gonzales High School One Act Play company of “Leading Ladies” performed at the District contest on March 11.

The company had their best performance and came home with the following individual awards:  Nicholas Gonzales earned Outstanding Technician, Jeslynn Vigil earned Honorable Mention All Star Cast, and River VanKirk and Chet Gold both earned All Star Cast awards.

Over Spring Break the GHS theatre department learned that one of their own advanced theatre students, Estrella Zavala, advanced to the State level of UIL Theatrical Design competition with her set design of Frankenstein. The State competition will take place in May. 

Gonzales High School has been fortunate to advance to the State level of UIL Theatrical Design since 2015. Gonzales has had a student qualify for State in each category of the competition at some point during these years. There was only one year that they did not have any state qualifiers and it was because the theatre department could not enter any work.  The design categories include Marketing, Costuming, Hair and Make-up, and Set.

Katia Sanchez and Adrian Buesing were the first GHS students to advance to the state level that year in 2015. Gonzales High School has since placed at state competition. In 2018, GHS placed fifth at state with a set design of “Raisin in the Sun” and Clayborn Park by Krystalynn Buesing. And in 2021, Gonzales HS had two students place at the very top. Deissy Hernandez was state champion with her set design of Don Quixote and Arabella Reyna was first runner-up with her costume design of Don Quixote.

Mrs. Buesing has been the sponsor of this event for all these years and she is very proud of Estrella. Her attention to detail, thoughtfulness, and hard work show in her design. All students who make it to the state level of competition qualify for a $1,000 scholarship and some of our students have received that scholarship because of this competition. The scholarship recipients did not all place at the state level. Some students who did not place received the scholarship too. Estrella has a bright future and Mrs. Buesing is glad she has this opportunity to show off her talents to a wider audience.
