Safety continued to be the top concern for Gonzales Independent School District during the Monday, Oct. 10, meeting of the school board.

GISD Superintendent Dr. Elmer Avellaneda said the district recently conducted an intruder detection audit and the audit tests for each individual campus indicated accessibility by unauthorized individuals, Avellaneda explained.

“This audit, conducted as part of Governor [Greg] Abbott’s school safety directions for all school systems following the tragedy in Uvalde, seeks to help districts identify how campuses can improve safety for our students. such as ensuring exterior doors are locked,” Avellaneda said.

Avellaneda continued to say the audit provides the district an opportunity “to create a safer learning environment” for students at GISD. The district continues to work closely with its Safety and Security Committee and there is training for all staff regarding securing the doors at each campus in GISD.

“The top priority of the Gonzales Independent School District and the state of Texas is to keep students safe every day,” Avellaneda said.
