The Texas Junior High Rodeo Association State Finals are rolling, rolling, rolling into town.

Gonzales will be host to the state finals May 22-28 at JB Wells Park, Arena & Expo.

The rodeo finals bring families, contestants and sponsors to town from all over the state of Texas, as well as Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. This event places emphasis on both family values and academic excellence, with participants required to show proof of passing 70 percent of their subjects.

Check in for the event will be Sunday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to noon, with campers and horses not allowed on grounds before Friday, May 20, starting at 8 a.m.

Admission for the event will be $8 for adults, $5 per child for performances. Season passes are $60 for adults and $40 per child and are purchased from region secretaries. These tickets/passes are also available for purchase at the event. No alcohol/drugs/tobacco consumption allowed.

“If you’re going to get into rodeo, just like Pop Warner or Little League, TJHRA is a step ladder where you step up to Rodeo,” said eight-time world champion Joe Beaver. “Texas Junior High Rodeo is the foundation of a ten story building — solid and tough, built to stay. You learn work ethic, you learn how to practice and why you need to practice, and to compete. TJHRA is a family affair. You will know once you’ve rodeoed with TJHRA if it is what you want to do, and go on to High School Rodeo and so on.”

Businesses are being sought to participate in the bucket fillers program to be distributed to contestants. Goodies must be donated to the JB Wells office by May 1. The expected number of contestants is 550 and organizers want to give them all a “big ol’ Gonzales welcome,” so they can come and rodeo it in this historic town.
