Gonzales High School hires new volleyball head coach

Gonzales High School will have a new varsity head coach for the third time in four years as Sara Neal will join the Apache staff for the 2021-22 season. Neal comes over from 6A Belton High School, where she was the first-assistant coach.

Neal replaces the head coach for the past two seasons, Brittany Oruonyehu, who will be the new head coach at El Campo.

Oruonyehu – or “Coach O” – saw the team go 9-15 in 2019-2020 and 15-9 last season.

She missed team’s final five games due to being on pregnancy leave. She left with the team with a 14-5 record and a 1-2 mark in 4A District 27. After she left, the team lost three of its final four district games and then a play-in game for the final playoff spot.

Belton missed the playoffs this year with a 9-11 record, but took third in district in 2019-2020 with a 12-4 mark and were 20-21 overall.
