Gonzales man fires shots, arrested after nearly 90-minute standoff

A 21-year Gonzales man was arrested this morning after entering the home of his former girl friend and firing shots. He held the women and her three children in the house on the 1500 block of St. Vincent St. 

The standoff ended after Juan Mario Garcia allegedly fired a shot in the direction of three law enforcement on the rear corner of the property. Concernt that the situation had escalated from negotiation to active-shooter, Gonzales Police Chief Tim Crow – who was among the three people at the rear of lot –  ordered officers to enter the home. 

Garcia was subdued and arrested without further incident. 

No injuries were reported.

According to Crow, police responded to a call at the house at 7:40 a.m. Phone contact was established with the girl friend.

"Since we were in contact, we decided not the push the situation and try to talk to the guy," Crow said. 

A Special Response Team and negotiator from the Texas Department of Public Safety were in route when the last shot was fired at about 9:05 a.m.

Garcia was booked into the Gonzales County Jail on Aggravated Kidnapping. Additional charges are expected to be field as the investigation develops.
