The Gonzales High School powerlifting teams have competed in three meets so far this year, including their own Gonzales Roll Tribe Invitational on Jan. 30, the Swords Up meet in Seguin on Feb. 8 and the Stockdale Invitational meet on Feb. 13.
Roll Tribe Invitational
The Apache boys finished in second place in their own Roll Tribe Invitational, just four points behind winner Canyon Lake (46) but 14 points ahead of third-place La Grange (28). The team got three first place finishes, three second places and three fourths for 42 points.
Jesus Maldonado won first place in the 114 class with a combined 755 pounds lifted, while Martin Cantu won the 148 class with 1,205 pounds lifted and Omar Borjon won the super heavy weight division with 1,630 pounds lifted.
Other male finishers included:
• Hector Reyna, second, 123 class, 715 pounds.
• Gary Lewis, second, 242 class, 1,370 pounds.
• Isaiah Balderas, second, 275 class, 1,215 pounds.
• Isaak Ibarra, fourth, 165 class, 935 pounds.
• Kevin Veliz, fourth, 242 class, 1,215 pounds.
• Charles Haufler, fourth, SHW class, 1,000 pounds.
The Apache girls finished in third place at the meet with 27 points, just six behind first place Cuero (33) and two behind Seguin (29). Gonzales had two firsts, a second, a third, two fourths and a fifth.
Madison Sampleton won the 220 class with a combined 1,020 pounds, while Jazlin Juarez won the 242 class with a combined 890 pounds.
Other female finishers included:
• Midaya Cantu, second, 165 class, 670 pounds.
• Teigan Jefferson, third, 148 class, 610 pounds.
• Mariah Mendoza, fourth, 114 class, 500 pounds.
• Marilyn Ramirez, fourth, 165 class, 620 pounds.
• Maritza Perez, fifth, 148 class, 540 pounds.
Swords Up Meet
The Apache boys finished fifth at the Swords Up Meet in Seguin with a total of 18 points, just one behind fourth place Comal Canyon (19). Gonzales had one first, two seconds and a fifth.
Jesus Maldonado won first place in the 114 class with a combined 770 pounds lifted.
Other male finishers included:
• Omar Borjon, second, 308 class, 1,705 pounds.
• Gary Lewis III, second, 242 class, 1,430 pounds.
• Isaiah Balderas, fifth, 275 class, 1,275 pounds.
The Apache girls finished sixth at the Swords Up Meet with 15 points, three behind fifth-place Lytle (18). Madison Sampleton won the 220 class with a combined 1,030 pounds, while Jazlin Juarez won the 242 class with a combined 900 pounds. The other finisher was Midaya Cantu in fifth place in the 165 class with 715 pounds.
Stockdale Invitational
The Apache boys finished in seventh place in Stockdale with 15 total points, just two points behind Floresville. The Apaches got one first, two thirds and two fifths. Charles Haufler won the 308 class with a combined 1,130 pounds.
Other male finishers included:
• Kevin Garcia, third, 148 class, 940 pounds.
• Isaak Ibarra, third, 165 class, 975 pounds.
• Francisco Aguayo, fifth, 220 class, 1,045 pounds.
• Gary Lewis III, fifth, 242 classs, 1,455 pounds.
The Apache girls finished in fifth place overall with 16 points. They got one first, one second, one third and one fifth. Jazlin Juarez won the 242 class with a combined 930 pounds.
