Gonzales youth compete in state amateur track meet

Nearly a dozen Gonzales athletes traveled to College Station over the weekend to take on the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) Summer Games of Texas 2019 after a summer of competition and qualifying.

Competing in the 4x100-meter girls 12u race was the team of Maddie Blackwell, Hailey Camarillo, Tenley Matias and Yesi Melchor, who finished with a time of 1:05.81.

Taking on the girls 16u high jump was Charlee Zella who finished with a height of 4-4, tied for 11th.

Veronica Moreno, who has done well for the Gonzales Lady Apaches track and field program, placed fourth in the 800-meter 18u girls race and third in the 1600-meter 18u girls race.

On the boys side, Ethan Crouch competed in the 110-meter hurdles 14u boys race, taking 11th overall in the preliminaries with a time of 19.13. The cutoff for qualification was set by San Angelo’s Stephen Franks who finished with a time of 18.87 seconds.

Long-distance runners Avery and Avram Almaguer also raced in the summer games, with Avram placing 21st in the 800-meter 16u boys race with a time of 2:15.28 and 22rd in the 1600-meter with a time of 5:22.86 while Avery placed 23rd in the 800-meter with a time of 2:15.85 and 26th in the 1600-meter with a time of 5:08.25.

Participating in the long jump boys 18u event was Reid Yackel who finished with a jump of 15-5 ½.
