Hernandez fills own vacancy on WISD Board of Trustees

A vacancy left by Waelder Independent School District Board of Trustees member Catrina Hernandez was filled at the board’s meeting on Monday, May 10.

Hernandez is filling a vacancy left by herself, after she did not return an application for School Board Trustee by the Feb. 12 deadline. She was the only applicant to apply for the position, after the board voted in March to appoint an applicant to fill this vacancy.

With this vacancy filled, trustee terms set to end on May 1 were all filled by returning board members JoAnn Ibarra, Adolph Gonzales and Catrina Hernandez. Ibarra and Gonzales will serve three-year terms, while Hernandez’s appointment means she will serve a one-year term, set to expire on May 7, 2022. This position will return to the ballot, and whoever is elected will serve out the remining two years of the vacancy. Two three-year terms will also expire on that date, according to Superintendent Jon Orozco’s Executive Assistant Linda Beale.

The board also voted to maintain its previous slate of board officers, with Dora Noyola as President, Diana Olmos as Vice President, and JoAnn Ibarra as Secretary.
