Gonzales Boys

The Gonzales High School boys basketball team could not sustain a quick start, and fell at home to Cuero, 59-50, to close out the first half of 4A District 27 play on Jan. 26. The Apaches were coming off a bye on Jan. 22.

The Apaches (1-3, 5-8) find themselves in fourth place in the five-team district, a game behind Pleasanton (2-2, 13-8) and a game ahead of Navarro (0-4, 4-10). La Vernia (4-0, 13-5) tops the district. With the win, Cuero (3-1, 7-2) is in second place.

The Apaches beat La Vernia, 44-36, on Jan. 12, and narrowly lost to Navarro, 53-51, on Jan. 15.

Gonzales girls

The Gonzales High School girls basketball opened the second half of 4A District 27 play with a 40-29 loss Jan. 26 at Cuero.

The Lady Apaches (1-4, 10-8) remain in fourth place in the five-team district with three games left to play against La Vernia (3-3, 17-6), Navarro (5-0, 23-1) and Pleasanton (0-6, 8-14).

Wins over La Vernia and Pleasanton would put the girls in the running for the No. 3 seed. Otherwise, barring an upset of Navarro, the team’s playoff fate may come down to the district finale against Pleasanton.

The team is back home on Friday, Jan. 29 against La Vernia, and then on the road Tuesday, Feb. 2 at Navarro. The Lady Apaches earlier lost to La Vernia, 66-48, and to Navarro, 53-35.
