Hospital to host mammogram event

October is breast cancer awareness month and Gonzales Healthcare Systems is hosting a “mammo mingle” open house event Oct. 10 to educate the community on the disease and the importance of regular screenings. The hospital will open up its Jane Johnson Women’s Imaging Center to public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

Patrons will have the opportunity to speak with mammogram technologists, inspect the hospital’s mammography department and schedule appointments at the event. Treats and drinks will also be provided for guests.

“We are excited to showcase our mammography suite to the public. Many women who’ve never had a mammography before may be nervous about it, they don’t know what to expect,” Holly Danz, Gonzales Healthcare Systems director of public relations and adverting, said. “This is a way for the ladies to view the equipment, talk to our highly qualified mammography technologists, and simply get comfortable in the space where the screening would take place.”

Representatives from Dillard’s will be onsite at the event for complimentary bra fittings. Fittings should take around 30 minutes. Those interested in the fitting should call 830-519-9097 to reserve a spot.

“So many women wear the wrong (bra) size,” Danz said. “It’s amazing what the right size and fit will do for you.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, not counting certain kinds of skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the United States and the second deadliest form of cancer for Texas women.
