For many of the local races in and involving Gonzales County, primary election night was the general election. Several area races only featured from candidates one party, so the winner of the March 3 results was the only hurdle to securing the seat.
On the county level, there were two Republican primaries that fit this mold: County Commissioner Pct. 3 and Constable Pct. 1. In the commissioner race, Incumbent Kevin La Fleur knocked off challenger Daisy Schekse Freeman, 64.22% to 35.78%. For constable, Johnnie Hall defeated Scott Rhodes, 52.11% to 47.89%. This was an open race as incumbent Leslie Pirkle opted to not run for reelection. Neither of these races drew a Democratic challenger.
There was also one contested race on the district level. For Republican District Judge, 25th Judicial District, Incumbent Bill Old toppled challenger Jacqueline Phillips Ott, with Old securing 57.73% of the vote to Ott’s 42.27%. Gonzales County was more favorable to Old, with him securing a 63.58% to 36.42% victory in county-only totals. This race also drew no Democratic challenger.
There were a handful of contested Congressional races involving Gonzales County decided last night as well. Republican Rey Gonzalez will be the candidate to challenge Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela for his seat in Texas’s 34th Congressional District. Gonzalez defeated Rod Lingsch 56.31% to 43.69% in districtwide totals. Interestingly, Gonzales County overwhelmingly broke for Lingsch, with 60.43% of the vote.
Vela, the incumbent, blew out his two Democratic competitors. Vela secured 75.04% of the vote to runner up Diego Zavala’s 18.47% and third place Osbert Rodriguez Haro III’s 6.49%.
Zavala fared better in Gonzales County, though Vela still took home the victory in county totals, 44.12% to 38.24%.
In the Democratic District 27 Congressional race, Ricardo “Rick” De La Fuente prevailed, 61.48% to 38.52%, over Charlie Jackson. De La Fuente will square off against incumbent Republican Rep. Michael Cloud in November. Cloud was unchallenged in the Republican primary.
All of the state level house and senate races were one candidate primary. Incumbent Republican State Sen. Lois Kolkhorst will face off against Democrat Michael Antalan in November, while incumbent Republican State Rep. John Cyrier will meet Democrat Madeline Eden in the general election.
