Inquirer hosts Gonzales mayor, school board forum

Candidates for Gonzales mayor and Gonzales ISD District 1 trustee will answer questions about their qualifications and positions on important issues at a forum sponsored by the Gonzales Inquirer next week.

The event will be held Monday, April 18, at the Texian Heritage Conference Center, 608 Saint Paul St., Gonzales. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the forum will start at 6 p.m.

Admission is free. While seating will be limited, the Inquirer will also livestream the event on its Facebook page.

Candidates for the city and school board races will introduce themselves and then be asked a series of questions by the moderator with each being given a minute to respond. The candidates will then give a brief closing statement.

All three candidates for Gonzales mayor — Isaac Anzaldua, Todd Bright and S.H. “Steve” Sucher — have indicated they will take part in the forum. Meanwhile, GISD District 1 challenger Elise Molina will also take part.

However, incumbent District 1 trustee Gloria Ann Torres will not be taking part after sending the following to the Inquirer: “Thank you so much for the invite. But due to me currently serving on the board, I will have to respectfully decline your invite. Thank you and have a blessed day!”

The candidate forum is not a debate and candidates will not address each other, but instead will address the audience when giving their answers. The event is being held as a friendly exercise in the political process and as a way for voters to get to know those who wish to serve the community in these elected positions.

The public is invited to submit questions they may have to publisher@gonzalesinquirer.com. Questions must be pertinent to either the mayoral race or the school board race and must be able to be answered by all candidates in that particular race. Personal attacks or accusations will not be used.

The Inquirer reserves the right to determine which questions, if any, will be asked of the candidates. Only the moderator will be allowed to ask questions of any candidate.

Inquirer Publisher Lew K. Cohn will serve as moderator for the forum, while Betty Cohn will serve as timekeeper.
