J.B. Wells Arena packed with rodeo finalists

Rodeo performers from all over the state of Texas swarmed J.B. Wells Arena as the Texas Junior High Rodeo Association held their annual state finals in Gonzales all of last week. Junior high athletes, including three locals, took on the state finals and some came away with top scores and buckles.

Gonzales’ Barrett Shelton took on boys goat tying, finishing 16.680 seconds in the first go and 17.230 seconds in the second go. Taking the top spot in the first go was Landon Cook of Alto, who was timed at 9.350 seconds. Huntsville’s Bryce Jensen had a sub 9-second time, finishing at 8.470 seconds in the second go. Jensen also took the top spot in the short go with his time of 8.950 seconds.

Shelton also competed in chute dogging, no-timing in both of his performances. Kemp’s Keller McDougald took first in the first go with a time of 2.430 seconds. Taking first in the second go was Paradise’s Kreece Dearing with an impressive 2.230 seconds. The short-go round was topped by Manvel’s Colin Fox with a time of 2.150 seconds.

Buck Garza of Gonzales competed in team roping, but no-timed both of his performances.

Kori Bigbee of Waelder competed in barrel racing, timing in at 17.635 seconds in her first go and 17.398 seconds in her second go. Taking the top spot in the first go was Macye Maben of Spur with her time of 16.478 seconds. Rosanky’s Devin Young placed first in the second go with at time of 16.633 seconds. The short-go was won by Cooper’s Riley Colclasure who was timed at 16.497 seconds.
